*It is given in fulfillment of a vow (hence the Latin term, short for ex voto suscepto, “from the vow made”) or in gratitude or devotion.
*To make an ex-voto before the a promise is received shows faith in the universe
Relics and Reliquaries
Relics~
*Something that has survived the passage of time, especially an object or custom whose original culture has disappeared
*Something cherished for its age or historic interest.
*An object kept for its association with the past; a memento.
*An object of religious veneration, especially a piece of the body or a personal item of a saint.
Reliquaries ~
*A receptacle, such as a coffer or shrine, for keeping or displaying sacred relics.
*They may be very small, such as a box or casket, or very large, ornate, and magnificent
*It should be remembered that great medieval buildings were often erected to house shrines or reliquaries, and so may be regarded, by extension, as reliquaries themselves
